Friday 28th December 1984

What a day!

I got a lift to town (Cardiff) with Mum and Dad and arrived at about 8:45am. After buying a stamp and posting a letter * I rushed off to HMV. I was first in but I didn't see much in the sale that I wanted. I bought "Shout" by Tears For Fears.

Then on to the Tandy shop. They haven't got any mixers (not til February) so I take a catalogue.

Then on to Gamlins ** and I buy their last Casio VL-tone. Good fun it is too! ***

Then on to Spillers. I buy "Life's a scream" 12 inch by A Certain Ratio (fantastic!) and "Devil and darkness" 12 inch by Freur (weird)

I have got 11p left from £36.

Oh I met Rhiannon in Cardiff, and Melissa.

The b side to the Freur single is excellent. It's called "Jazz is King (?)" - including question mark and brackets - and once it gets going from a slow drum and synth and voice part, a piano enters and the singer starts singing "The In Crowd" and shouts "Thank you, Lamb Chop!" And it keeps on going. Fantastic! ****

** Gamlins being the oldest musical instrument store in Cardiff on St Marys Street. It closed down about a month ago, I was in there recently and it felt so sad, I bought many pedals and instruments from there over the decades.

**** Lamb Chop here being the glove puppet lamb, Karl Hyde was singing in a pronounced lamb like voice before his exhortation to Shari Lewis's puppet.

Wednesday 28th November 1984

A large outcry about the deletion of my diary from almost all sides - except Rachel, who is probably silently glad that I'll stop. That's where you're wrong, my dear. Stanwell school may think my life in words comes to a grinding halt on December 4th but I know it isn't. * I hate Lesley. She said to me after History "You make me puke" which is what I would expect from her. Then she asks me in Physics for a book of my diary. Fuck off! I am working on a third verse for "Fond regards..." ** Music world eruptions. Holey wants to buy a guitar. That could rule him out of any possible band I form. *** Brud's band are getting together again on Saturday so I'll do my tape technician bit. Should be good for a laugh. Neil Walker said he had read one of my earlier diaries (bk 4 by my reckoning) and said on every page there was a mention of Debbie and an OMD lyric. Quite true! I'm having a packed lunch tomorrow**** cos Haggy is giving us a lunch time ...

Monday 26th November 1984

Title for entry - "Robert Morgan Dies" God I'm glad to be alive. More on that later. Not much happened in school as usual. I hadn't done some homework and thought I'd get killed for it. Hence the title. As usual, saw Rachel, as usual, with Kinny, as usual, arm in arm around school. While on the subject of school, the rumour about me fancying Alison is spreading. I have denied it because I don't fancy her and I know she doesn't fancy me. I think it was started by Jeremy Hall.* Now to the main topic. Going home from school I was walking with Jez Hall, Mumford and Cooper. When we came to cross Victoria Road I stopped and the others ran across the road. I shouted "Trying to get run over, are you?" I then looked around and ran across but didn't see a car coming from my right. It braked hard, blew its horn and I only just dodged it. "Bloody hell, I survived" I think to myself.
